PREVIEW

Pokemon Silver and Gold- Full Preview of your next Poke-fix

Features
  • More than 100 new Pokemon unique to the series
  • New items including the Pokegear
  • Real-time RPG using internal clock
  • Game Boy Printer support
  • For Game Boy and Game Boy Color

The game starts off very similar to Red, Blue and Yellow, with the only exception that you enter the current time when you switch the game on for the first time. From here, you're taken through the usual intro sequences where you enter your name and meet up with Professor Oak (Okido, in the Japanese version) in his lab. Like in Red and Blue, you are asked to pick one of three Pokéballs that contain three completely new Pokémon: Waninoko, a crocodile-like water creature, Chicoreeta, a grass Pokémon who seems to have borrowed Marge Simpson's necklace and Hinoarashi, a fire Pokémon (the one on the picture at the top). I picked Hinoarashi, #155, by the way. Hinoarashi is best translated as "Firestorm", but expect the US version of #155 to have a more trademarkable name.

After going through the game basics and picking up medicine, you leave the lab and explore the town. The first thing you will notice is how much more vibrant the colors are in this game, despite the fact that it's backwards compatible with the regular Game Boy. Everything here looks a lot prettier than in the only partially colored Pokémon Yellow. A quick look at the world map confirms that this game is not a rehash of the original Pokémon titles. It's a new game, with new characters, new Pokémon and a completely new quest.

The story is the usual "you're a Pokémon trainer bound for glory" stuff, but there are numerous surprises and side quests that make this game stand out from its predecessors. For example, you can now get fruit from strange-looking plants that will heal your Pokemon, serve as antidote to poison, and so on. After a brief encounter with your new adversary (the default name in Pokémon Gold is "Silver" -- although he doesn't tell you his name when you first bump into him) you will also find a Pokémon egg. Once you bring it to Professor Utsugi, another local Pokémon expert, he will freak out and call it the greatest discovery in Pokémon history. You already know what this little find is all about, right? That's right, Pokémon breeding.

Although the game contains all of the original Pokémon from the last game, it doesn't take long before you run into new creatures. Some of the Pokémon we encountered include Otachi (#161), a badger-like fuzzball with bunny ears, Usokki, a walking tree, Eipam, a monkey with a hand attached to its tail, Hanekko, a turnip thingy, Marill, Donfar and Togepi -- which you may have seen in the Pokémon movie, and a little yellow something that's sure to rival Marill and Pikachu as the new favorite. Its name is Pichu -- a pre-Pikachu-type electric Pokemon.

Like in the previous games, you will encounter Pokémon in high grass and dungeons. Battles start with a similar "wipe" screen effect as before, but the actual battle graphics are much improved. Attack and capture animations now look a lot better and your Pokémon no longer looks pixelated when it appears in the lower left corner. The music is likewise new. Another improvement is the addition of an on-screen experience bar in the lower right corner of the screen. When you gain experience points, the bar will fill up until it's full. Once that happens, your Pokémon gains a level and the bar will clear and fill with the rest of the points you gained.

But that's not the only upgrade. Once you press the Start Menu, you get this impressive list:

  • Pokédex: Similar to the old one, but with better graphics and more colors. You don't have it when you start off, but it's a cinch to get.
  • Pokémon: Your six own Pokémon. This is where you arrange and organize them for battle, just like the original.
  • Rucksack: Cool. You keep all your items and goodies in a new backpack with four compartments. You can switch between the different compartments by pressing left or right.
  • Pokégear: This is another awesome new addition. This gadget doesn't do much in the beginning, but once you progress through the game, you can access the map here and even use a cell phone to call up Prof. Oak, your mother or friends you have met on your quest.
  • Status: Your trainer's status, including badges you have won, etc.
  • Report: Save your game. You can save anywhere you like.
  • Settings: Adjust everything from message speed to the battle animations. You can even set the audio to stereo.
Pokémon Gold/Silver is not just a tweaked version of Pokémon Red and Blue with new creatures – there are new features to this adventure. All Pokémon in the game will be assigned a gender, either male or female. When you breed a male and female Pokémon, it will net an egg -- which Pokémon you've bred will affect how the Pokémon grows, as well as what abilities and attacks it will have as it gains experience in battle. Pokémon can also utilize weapons and items that you've acquired during the adventure.

One of the coolest features, though, is the fact that the game will be real-time. As you play the game, the day will turn to night and night into day at the appropriate times, thanks to the "time" option you set at the beginning of the game. The game will also have real-time events based on the battery-backed clock – meaning you'll have to complete the event before the specified time. Some Pokémon will only come out at night – like the owl Hoo-Hoo. So if you want to catch them all, you have to stay up late to do it.

Like Pokémon Red and Blue, Pokémon Gold and Silver will restrict which Pokémon you can capture – Pokémon Gold will have creatures that you cannot capture in Pokémon Silver, and vice versa. The only way you'll catch them all is if you trade between the two versions. You can also trade with players with Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow, but those gamers cannot trade for the newer creatures in Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Sadly, Pokémon Gold and Silver won't be released in the US until September 2000, but in Japan you'll be able to get your hands on them in November '99. Check out the great video and screenshots below.

Note: If you're planning to buy the Japanese import release of Gold/Silver which came out on November 21, be warned that this game contains a lot of Japanese text. Although kanji are not used, you should at least be able to read hiragana and katakana and have basic understanding of the Japanese language to enjoy it.

WALKTHROUGH

You start out in Wakaba town. At the start of the game, go out of your room and go downstairs. You'll see your mom. Talk to her and she hands you the Pocket Gear and asks you to set the date on your gameboy. Then, go out of your house. You'll see a large building next to your house. It's the pokemon lab. There, Professor Utsugi (It's not Prof Oak!) lets you select one of the 3 starting Pokemon. You could either choose Chikorita, a grass type pokemon, Waninoko, a water type pokemon, or Hinoarashi, a fire pokemon. If you want to finish the game easily, choose the fire type. If you want a challenge, choose the grass type. Starting players should go with Hinoarashi for a much easier time. After choosing one, explore a bit then go west until you reach Yoshino City. In Yoshino there is an old man standing, talk to him and he will bring you around the city, then he goes into his house. Enter the house and talk to him, and he will give you the Map Card. You can now use your Pocket Gear to look at the map. Then go north along Route 30, building up your pokemon along the way. Eventually you will find a house. Inside is Professor Oak (I told you!). He will give you the Pokedex and an Unknown Egg. Spend a night there and the nextmorning, as you leave the house, Prof Utsugi would you to say that somebody have stole one of his pokemon. theThen go back to Yoshino City and heal your Pokemon in the Pokemon Center.

While walking east back to Wakaba Town, your rival appears. Your rival has chosen the pokemon that is strong against the type that you chose in the lab. Don't worry, His pokemon hasn't learned any special moves yet. Defeat him and go back to Wakaba Town and find Professor Utsugi. He will keep that egg for you. When you leave, one of his assistants will stop you and give you five free Pokeballs. Head west to Yoshino City and explore the city. Be sure to talk to everyone there. Then head north and you will find a way to Kikyou City. If you find a bellsprout along the way, catch it. A certain boy in Kikyou city trades a bellsprout for an Onix. At the north of the city there is a tower called the Tower of Bellsprouts. You'll encounter some very weird monks here. (Very stupid, they worship a weak pokemon). Defeat all the monks. The monks use plant pokemon so if you go with Hinoarashi, you wouldn't have any problems. If you didn't chose Hinoarashi, I advise that you build up your pokemon a little more before entering.

In the tower, you run into your rival again but he won't fight you! After all the monks have been defeated, the last monk at the topmost floor will give you HM 05 Flash. Then go to the first gym. This gym uses only bird pokemon, so if you chose the grass pokemon, be careful. Defeat the gym leader and he will give you the Wing Badge. It allows you to use Flash. As a parting gift, you would receive TM31, Maybe Sand Hell or someboy called it Mud Shadow. Then go to the Pokemon Center in this city and you'll find that Professor Utsugi is there waiting for you. He'll give you back your Unknown Egg. But be sure that you are not bringing more than 5 Pokemon with you. Bring that egg with you and after about an hour it will hatch! It's Togepi!

Go south and you will find a cave. Finish the puzzle. There are actually 4 of them, but you can go back to them later. If you finished the puzzle, you will fall to an Egyptian tomb and you will find a strange pokemon that has many forms. Catch at least 3 of them, then a professor outside would give you the annondex. There are actually 26 of them, each representing an alphabet. Go south, and will find another cave called Link Cave, but before you enter, be sure to catch one of those electric sheep. They can be quite helpful especially in the Silver Version (for Lugia), since most of the pokemon in this area are weak against electricity. After exploring the cave, head out and head to the next town, Hiwada Town. In Hiwada Town you'll see that there is a well being blocked by a Team Rocket member. You can't do anything yet so enter the north-most house and a man will run out. (Come back to him later in the game to exchange certain nuts if you want to get special pokeballs other than Pokeball, Great ball, Ultra Balls or Master Balls) Then go back to the well that was previously blocked and get in. There you will find some Team Rocket members and two Slowpokes. Defeat the Team Rocket members to rescue the Slowpokes. (The Team rocket members are pushovers anyway) After rescuing the poor little Slowpokes get out and enter the second gym.

In the second gym, the trainers all use bug type pokemon. If you chose the grass type pokemon, be careful again. Defeat the gym leader and he'll give you the Insect Badge. It allows you to use TM 05 Cut. As a parting gift, you would get TM49, Mega Slash (A attack you would like your bug pokemon to learn). Then go west into the Ubame Forest. Before you go in, your rival shows up again and he challenges you to a match. He uses his pokemon, Gastly, and Zubat. Now's your chance to show off your pokemon skills!

Inside the Ubame Forest there is a Farfetch'd. Talk to it and it'll run away. Chase it back to its owner (the man standing north). Then the man standing beside the owner gives you HM 01 Cut as a reward. Look for the strange tree blocking an area and use Cut on it. It'll fall apart and you can enter. Go north, get out of the forest, and you'll notice that there is a house on your right. This is the Pokemon Daycare, inside is an old man and an old woman. You can leave 2 of your Pokemon here for them to look after. Your Pokemon can gain experience here and gain levels, but you have to pay money when you want to take them back (after you leave your pokemon here, they gain 1 Exp per step you take.) Here you can crossbreed Pokemon too! In crossbreeding, give a male pokemon to the man, and a female pokemon to the woman. When you return, be sure you have 3 slots free. Two for the pokemon you gave them, and the third one for the egg. Or if you want, get only the egg and leave the two pokemon to gain Exp. Go further north and reach Kogane City. Find the pokemon center and heal your pokemon then enter the gym. All of the Trainers here use normal type pokemon. Be sure to bring a lot of awakenings because the gym uses a lot of Clefairys and Jigglypuffs. They can put all of your pokemon to sleep. Defeat the gym leader and get the Regular Badge and TM45, Mellow Mellow. The Regular Badges allows you to use HM 04 Strength. Leave and explore the city and find the bike shop. If you have the bike voucher, the man there would give you a bike. Go to the house to the left of the poke center. Be sure you have a free slot. A man there would give you an Eevee. Enter the Radio Tower (the highest black building), and talk to the right-most lady behind the counter. She asks you 5 questions and if you get them all right (the answers are Yes, Yes, No, Yes, No) she will give you the Radio Card. Get out from the tower and go into houses and talk to the people in the upper right corner. In the house with many flowers, a girl there would give you Squirtle liquid. Anyway, get your bicycle from the bike shop (It’s free!) and visit the Game corner if you want to buy TM14 -Blizzard, TM25-Thunder, TM38-Fire Blast, Abra, Sandshrew and Dratini (It’s cheap- only 2100 coins).

In the northern gate of Kogane City, a man there would give you a spearow with a mail attached to it. Make sure you have a free slot. You must give this mail to a fat man at route 31, beside a tree. He would give you TM50 in return. But you could return it to him once you have fly.

After getting that item, go north to the Nature Park. This is like the Safari zone in R/G/B/Y, but better, since you could use one pokemon here (Be sure to choose the one with sleeping, or paralyze techniques to make capturing pokemon here a breeze). Go east through the building. Go a bit north and you will find a tree-like thing blocking the way. Face it and press A if you got the squirtle liquid. The tree would then attack you. I recommend you to capture the tree because it's the only one in the game. After you catch the tree Get TM08 from the man standing to the right of the tree. This TM enables you to remove cracked stones. Finish the battle, then go north to Enjiu City.

In Enjiu city, explore the city, find the pokemon center, the shops then enter the gym. In this gym, the trainers all use ghost type pokemon, so bring a psychic or ground pokemon since Gastly and Haunters are weak against psychic and their poison attacks are quite useless against ground types. Be careful of the invisible planks in the gym. If you fall down, you would be teleported back to the gym entrance. Defeat the gym leader and get the Phantom Badge and TM31, Shadow ball (A physical attack). It allows you to use HM 03 Surf.

In Enjiu City there is a house with a Ryhdon and lots of Japanese dancing girls. Although they look pretty, these girls don't take to kindly to strangers and they'll attack you. They all use Eevee's evolutions: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Eifi (Psychic Eevee), and Blacky (Evil Eevee). Defeat all the dancing girls then talk to the man who is watching you fight. He'll give you HM 03 Surf. Go to the tower at the north. Be sure one of your pokemons are equipped with TM08. Defeat the trainers in the tower, and at the end, you would find the three legendary dogs going away in different directions. Go west, and you will find a Milk tank (a pokemon) Farm. In one of the houses, there is a sick Milktank. Feed it lots of nuts, and they would give you a TM. Explore the farm then Go south to Asagi City.

Enter the Asagi gym but nobody is inside. Explore the city. You'll find your rival but he won't fight you again. There is a lighthouse near the southeast coast of the city. It is the Asagi Lighthouse. Go inside and upstairs, at you'll find the Gym Leader Mikan hiding out here. She would ask you a favor (She is sick and wants you to buy medicine), then leave. In Asagi city, there's a man in this city who gives you HM 04 Strength. After you explore the city, surf west then south and reach Taban City. During surfing you may notice a set of islands that are blocked by some whirlpools. That island is called the Floating Island. Later, this is where you would find Lugia.

You are now in Taban city. Be sure to have HM 04 before you enter the gym. In this gym, they all use fighting pokemon, so have a psychic or flying pokemon. Defeat the gym leader and get the Shock Badge and TM01 Explosive Punch (Like Fissure, a attack that kill your enemy instantly) . It allows you to use HM 02 Fly. Then in the city, a girl standing gives you HM 02 Fly. Before you go, be sure to talk to the salesman south of the gym. He gives you the medicine to cure Mikan. Equip fly on your pokemon then use your pokemon to fly back to Asagi city.

Go back to the Asagi lighthouse and talk to her. Give her the item that you got from the salesman. She would leave the tower and enter the Gym. Go back to the gym with her and challenge her to a match. There are no trainers here. It's a one on one battle. Mikan uses steel type pokemon. She uses 2 magnemites and a steel Onix (Haganail). so for the first two, use a ground pokemon, and the last one, a water or fire pokemon (Steel is weak against fire, and Haganail is part Ground). Defeat her and get the Steel Badge. Fly back to Enjiu City and go east through the Mortar Mountain and reach Chouji Town.

In Chouji Town there is a man in the east area and every time you want to pass the way, he charges you 300 yen but he doesn't let you go. The gym in Chouji town is blocked so go north through a building. Be careful! There is an easier way on the right hand side, but every time you pass it Team Rocket members will charge you 1000 yen! So I recommennd that you go along the grassy area in the left. Reach the Angler Lake, and there is a Red Gyrados. Beat it or capture it, then go ashore. Then Lance appears (the one in the Elite Four). Talk to him and he gives you an item. then go back to Chouji Town and go to the to the store next to that fake who charges 300 yen. Go inside and Lance is there. He leads you down the secret staircase. It's the Team Rocket base. Everytime you cross a statue, at least two rockets would battle you successively. They would either use rattatas, Koffings, or both. A psychic would come in handy. Defeat them all and talk to everyone. Get the key from one of the computers inside. Defeat the boss. Go back and open the door. Then the boss and a woman show up. Lance shows up and asks if he could fight with you. Cooperate with Lance to defeat the bosses. Go inside the power source and you'll battle 6 electrodes. You and Lance would each defeat 3 Electrodes. When you defeat them, Lance give you HM 06 Whirlpool-Crasher.

Go to the gate where the team rockets were, and the gatekeeper would give you a TM. Go back to the Chouji gym now. The gym is a huge ice puzzle, and everyone uses ice pokemons. A fire or electric type would come in handy (What did I tell you about the electric sheep). Defeat him and get the Ice Badge and TM16, Numbing Wind. It allows you to use HM 06 Whirlpool-Crasher. Fly back to Kogane City and enter the Radio Tower. You discover that it has been invaded by Team Rocket! Defeat each member and go up and up. Talk to the gentleman and he gives you the key for the prison. Go to the underground tunnel in this city and there is a passage leading to the prison. Open the door and go downstairs. Your rival would then appear and challenge you. After you beat him, go and heal your pokemon then return and defeat the 3 guys standing there, and switch the 3 switches next to the 3 guys on the wall to open the stone doors.

Fight the Team Rocket members, and rescue the man and he will give you the key to the door in the radio tower. Go back to Radio Tower and open the gate on the 3rd floor and battle all the trainers. The two bosses are here again. Defeat them. Now fly back to Chouji Town.

Go east, and the man is no longer there. Go east and into the Ice Loophole. Just solve the Ice puzzles, but before you get out, be sure to catch ice pokemon (for the eight gym). Note: Be sure you get all the items in the ice loophole since one of them is HM07, which is waterfall-up. You can't go to the Elite Four without it.

Enter the Last Gym in Fusube City. Make sure you have Pokemon with Strength. Everyone here uses dragons so train your ice pokemon first, before defeating the gym leader. Here, you could erase HM or TM's, just see the later section.

Defeat her but she doesn't give you a badge. Surf and get into the Dragon Cave north to the gym. You could find dratini's only here, so be sure to get one. Surf again and crash the whirlpool and find the item. Pick it up and immediately Ibuki shows up. She gives you the Raging Badge which allows you to use HM 07 Waterfall-Up and TM24, Dragon Breath.

Since you have all 8 badges, you are now ready to defeat the elite four. Fly back to Wakaba Town and find Professor Utsugi. He gives you a Master Ball. Then surf along the river to the east. Go into the cave and inside is the Tojou Waterfall. Use Waterfall-Up to climb. Get out of the cave and the girl in the house gives you a TM. Walk along the path and defeat all trainers. Go into the building at the end of the path, and there is 3 passages: the left one and the right one was blocked. Go along the middle one. The Victory Road is now easier than in the R/G/B/Y. You'll run into your rival again. Defeat him and you'll reach Indigo Plateau.

Note: Don't talk to the old man in the left of the pokemon centre in Indigo Plateau. He'll teleport you back to your house. Use it only if your pokemon have really low Exp or you want to buy cheaper healing stuff.

Go upstairs and battle the Elite Four. Some of the trainers are from R/B/Y. I don't want to spoil the excitement so I'm only going to give hints. The first one is Istuki, who uses psychic pokemon, the next one is Koga, The third one is Bruno, The fourth one is Karin, who uses Evil type pokemon. After you defeat all 4, you would beat Lance (Should have called it the elite 5). If you defeat him, you are now the League Champion! After that, Prof. Oak and your mom would be there. Lance would then put your pokemon in the hall of fame. The credits would scroll but it is not the end of the game.

After the ending, you are in Wakaba Town. Find Professor Utsugi and he gives you St Anne Ticket. Fly to Asagi City and enter the south-most house. Walk along the passage and at last you reach the dock. Go aboard the ship. Defeat every trainer, so the sailor would let you pass. Visit the captain of the ship and talk to the girl next to him. Now leave the ship and

SURPRISE!

You are now in Vermillion City! You've just taken a trip back to the original pokemon world! Defeat Lt. Surge. Defeat him and get the Orange Badge. Then go north to Saffron City.

Go to the psychic's house and he would give you a TM. Then go to copycat's house and give her the Clefairy doll. She would give you a ticket that allows you to use the train from Saffron to Kogane City. Go to Sabrina's gym and defeat her to get the Marsh Badge. Head west to Celadon City. Head to Erika's gym and defeat all of her plants to get the rainbow badge and TM19, Giga Drain. Go west, through the Cycling Road and reach Fuschia City.

Go to the gym, and defeat all the trainers. They all use poison type pokemon. Beat Anzu (Koga’s sister) to get the pink badge and TM06, Toxic. Go east and north to go to Lavender town.

A man at the radio tower in Lavender would upgrade your radio card. Go north to the rock tunnel, make sure you have Flash.

After going out of rock tunnel, surf in the canal to the power plant. Talk to the man at the reactors. When you get out, a messenger would talk to the scientist. Head west to Cerulean city.

Enter the gym, and a team rocket member shows up. Go to nugget bridge and defeat him. Head east to Bill's house and defeat all the trainers. Misty is there talking with his boyfriend? Talk to her, and she goes away. Head back to the gym. Go inside and defeat all trainers. Defeat Misty and get the Cascade Badge. Before leaving, search around the square pool in the middle and you will find an item. Go to the Power Plant. Inside the Power Plant, talk to the man standing at the right side. He gives you a TM and an item. Fly to Vermilion city, head east, and encounter the Snorlax. Tune your radio to the highest frequency. Press A at the Snorlax and it will attack. Be careful, it is at level 50. Capture it since it is the only one in the game.

Afetr defeating the five gym leaders, go to the pokemon fan club. Talk to the president and he gives you an item. Then talk to the man below the president and he would give you a Clefairy Doll.

Go through Diglett's cave and end up in Pewter City. Defeat Bock to get the boulder badge. Head to Mt. Moon and battle your rival. This is the last time you are going to battle with him. After that, go south through the Viridian forest (not a forest anymore), through Viridian City, and head back to Pallet town. Surf south to Cinnabar Island and Gary Oak is there!.Talk to him, and he teleport. Heal your pokemon, and head east to Seafoam islands. Enter the cave and defeat Blaine to get the Cream badge. Fly back to Viridian city.

In Viridian city, head back to the gym. Guess who's the leader... It's Gary. He uses the pokemon he used in R/G/B/Y except for the 3 starter pokemons in R/B/G and the Eeeve’s 3 evolution in Y. So have a balanced team. Defeat him to get the green badge.

Heal your pokemon and go the building north of the gym. You are going to battle a clone of Yourself. Your clone has all 3 starting pokemons in pokemon G/S at their final evolved stage. This is a good time to level up your pokemons since you could defeat yourself over and over again as long as your HP's are full enough. After collecting all 16 Badges fly back to Pallet Town. Find Professor Oak and talk to him. He tell you to go to Shirogane Mountain. Fly to Viridian City, head west, and enter the house. The two men that blocked the way are gone. Go along the west one. And you are now in Shirogane Mountain! Walk through those grassy areas and eventually you will find the cave. Okay, it's now time for the last battle. Make sure that your pokemon is at Lv.70 to about Lv.80 or you will probably lose. It is advisable to let at least a pokemon in your team to learn Hyper Beam as Snorlax is quite hard to defeat and it is fond to use Amnesia. Enter the cave and have a short walk. Then cross the bridge and who is standing there... It's Ash Ketchum! His pokemons are now stronger than ever. He uses

Pikachu Lv.81
Blastoise Lv.77
Eifi Lv.75
Snorlax Lv.75
Charizard Lv.77
Venusaur Lv.77

Well, good luck on your journey

The Legendary Birds

Houou

In the Gold Version, the Phoenix, Houou is available at Lv40. In the Silver Version, its at Lv. 70. In the Gold Version, To catch it, you must first defeat the 8 gyms. Then go to Enjiu city and enter the north-most house. It would lead to Suzu tower. The entrance that was previously blocked by a monk is now gone. Enter and keep going upstairs and you will eventually find Houou! Use the Master Ball to capture it (or if you can, use other balls). It's at Lv.40 when you capture it. In the Silver Version, however, you must go to Pewter city after you caught Lugia and the old man outside would give you an item. Then go to Suzu tower to capture Houou.

Lugia

In the Silver Version, the dragon type bird Lugia, is available at Lv40. In the Gold Version, its at Lv.70. To capture Lugia in the Silver Version, first go to Asagi City after defeating the Eighth Gym. Surf west and there is a set of islands called the Floating Islands. Enter one of the four caves, and after a walk you go down the waterfall, then get into the secret inner cave, and Lugia is there swimming! Use the Master Ball to capture it (or if you can, use other balls). It's at Lv.40 when you capture it. In the Gold Version however, you must first capture Houou, then go to pewter city and the old man there would give you an item. Go to Lugia's cave, and capture it. Be careful, its at Lv 70.

Evolution Stones

To get the evolution stones, you must show the old man at sea cottage (Bill's house) a certain pokemon (most probably a pokemon that needs the stone to evolve).

Leaf stone-Oddish
Fire stone-Vulpix
Water stone-Staryu
Thundestone-Pichu
To get the moonstone, you must go to route 27.

To get Solar stone,  see next section.

How to win in the Bug Catching Contest

The basis of winning the Bug catching contest is the rarity and the level of the pokemon. Here is the Hierarchy of bugs:

Scyther - you'll probably win a Solar Stone with this one
Pinsir
Butterfree
Beedrill
Venonat
Metapod
Kakuna
Caterpie
Weedle - you'll probably going to get a nut.

If you win first place, the man there would give you a solar stone, which will evolve gloom into kireihana (Looks like a lady dressed in flower), and Himanuts to Kimawari(Sunflower). Second price is a de-evolution stone which will prevent your pokemon from evolving when it is equipped with it. The third price is a special nut which has a greater healing power.

When does Eevee evolve?

Well, ther have been many rumors that Eevee evolves when it is happy enough, but this is just plain wrong. Eevee evolves when a certain stat quota has been reached. It is basically defined by this equation:

Q = 5 * L ^ (2 / 3)

where Q = Stat quota
           L = Eevee's Level

If Eevee reaches this quota by day, he evolves into an Eifi. by night, it turns into a Blacky.

How to erase HM's and TM's

Well, on the past versions of Pokemon, you cannot erase HM's or TM's. But in this version you can! There is a man on Fusube City. He will ask you which pokemon would he erase the TM. Then he would ask you which move to erase. Then Poof! The HM or TM is gone. This is very useful for a pokemon that had Flash, or other worthless HM's like Whirpool Tide.
